Floating shoe is a kind of pilot shoe or coupling installed at the end of the casing column, which is capable of generating buoyancy and serves as both a support ring and a back pressure vanell (one-way valve).

As a petroleum-specific term, its English name is “float shoe”, which was officially included as an industry standard term in 1994.

Specific function

Function of the shoe: to guide the casing column into the borehole smoothly and reduce the downstream resistance.

Back pressure vanes: prevent backflow of drilling fluid or cement slurry and ensure directional filling of cement slurry during cementing operations.

Buoyancy Aid: Reduce the weight of casing column through internal design, and reduce the friction resistance during decentralization.

Difference with floating hoop

Installation location: Floating shoes are located at the end of the casing column, while floating hoops are usually installed 20~30 meters from the end.

Functional Focus: Both of them contain pressure return vanes, but the floating hoop emphasizes the support function of the support ring, while the floating shoes focus on the guiding function of the guide shoes.

Application Scenario

It is mainly used in the cementing process of oil drilling to ensure the stability of casing column lowering and cementing, and is a key component to improve the sealing and safety of the wellbore.
